Workshops with Marsha McCloskey
May 4 & 6, 2012
We welcome Marsha McCloskey from Eugene, Oregon, with two workshops and her lecture “Feathered Star Quilts”. Marsha McCloskey is an internationally known author and instructor, famous for her Feathered Star quilts. Since 1983, she has written or co-authored twenty-nine books and designed three ingenious rulers for rotary cutting. Specializing in the Feathered Star and other traditional pieced designs, she has taught drafting, rotary cutting and machine piecing to quilters all over the United States and in eight foreign countries. She has her own small publishing company, Feathered Star Productions, Inc., and her STAPLES background fabrics are produced by Clothworks. Her newest book, Feathered Star Quilt Blocks II and the Feathered Star Ruler are now available. You can see Marsha’s work at her website: www.marshamccloskey.com. Follow her on Facebook as Marsha McCloskey-Feathered Star.
Radiant Feathered Star
Friday, May 4
Sportsman's Alliance of Maine Conference Center in Augusta
As Feathered Stars go, the Radiant Feathered Star is pretty easy to cut and piece. It just has a lot of pieces and takes some time. The results are well worth the effort.
In this workshop, you will:
- learn to draft the Radiant Feathered Star on graph paper
- learn bias-strip piecing to make the 2-triangle Feather Squares
- explore color choices and value placement
- focus on the precise cutting and piecing
Feathered Star Quilt Blocks I by Marsha McCloskey. (Some copies will be available in class. It is not necessary to have the book to complete the workshop.) |
“Simple Gifts”
Sunday, May 6
Husson College, Bangor
This class is about learning to think about and use large-scale prints in new ways. We’ll be pushing ourselves to "unlearn” what we know about contrast and learn to choose fabrics that will work to make simple pieced designs look gloriously complex. Inspiration is taken from quilts of the early 1800s.
The project is a quilt top called Simple Gifts designed by Cathy Mathis for the first Blended Quilts book. Precision Trimmer rulers (designed by Marsha McCloskey) will be used to make the Ohio Star border easily and accurately.
The Best of Blended Quilts by Marsha McCloskey and Sharon Yenter (In the Beginning). Some copies will be available in class for $14.95. It is not necessary to have the book to complete the workshop. |
